Enhancements for the 2017 Ford Explorer

You may remember that Ford added the top Platinum trim level and a 365-horsepower EcoBoost V6 to the 2016 Explorer, providing more performance options. This hasn't stopped them from upping the ante once again for the 2017 model year. For the 2017 Explorer, Ford has added an available Sport Appearance Package along with other adjustments. For starters, some of the visual upgrades on the Sport trim, such as its blackout grille, are now available on the Explorer XLT as well. The Sport Appearance Package is also a great hit, building on the XLT to give it some of the visual features of the Sport trim. Opting for this package enhances the exterior of the SUV with a stylish black roof rack, black exterior trim, the blackout grille, and dark gray 20-inch wheels. Inside models with this package, you will find gray seats featuring contrast stitching, micro-suede inserts on the seats and door panels, and leather bolsters. All in all, the upgrades add both style and comfort to the Ford Explorer we know and love.

Changes to the Ford Explorer throughout its History

The 1991 Ford Explorer marked the debut of this SUV and it was initially available with two or four doors and the choice of two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The two-door actually had a slightly shorter platform than its four-door counterpart. The idea was that those looking for a maneuverable, sporty vehicle would opt for the two-door and those who needed extra passenger room would choose the four-door. This 1991 Explorer was offered in three trims with available features like aluminum wheels and blacked-out exterior accents. It ran on a 155-horsepower, 4.0-liter V6 engine.

The second-generation Explorer began the 1995 model year with a facelift that included new light clusters and a new grille along with new bumpers and a downward-sloping nose. The Explorer also grew four inches in length, front side airbags were added, and a ControlTrac 4WD system was also added. The 210-horsepower V8 engine became available in 1996. The second generation offered four trims for the four-door model and a single one for the two-door model. The third-generation Explorer arrived in 2002 with an independent suspension and a longer wheelbase to create room for the third row. Ford also enhanced driving dynamics and ride comfort. Ford made numerous safety upgrades throughout this generation, eventually adding Sync and revised navigation near the end of the generation. There was another redesign for 2011, marking the new generation that you are more likely to see on the roads today.
