Christiansburg, VA
Christiansburg, VA, was the home of two of the most famous American pioneers in the early 19th century: Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett. To this day, an outstanding warrant for Boone's arrest remains unfilled and on record in the Christiansburg courthouse. Boone was in Christiansburg visiting Crockett when he took out a loan for supplies he and his men needed as they forged the Great Wilderness Road. However, after moving on from the small town, Boone never paid back his debts. Because of his folk hero status, the citizens of Christiansburg never pursued the warrant. To celebrate Boone, Crockett and other early American pioneers from the region, Christiansburg's Kiwanis Club hosts the Wilderness Trail Festival every year.

American trailblazers aren't the only famous people to come from Christiansburg. While the inspiration for the name of the popular soda Dr Pepper isn't formally on record, one theory is that it was named for a Dr. Pepper who lived in Christiansburg in the late 1800s. The drink was first sold by a storeowner, Wade Morrison, who once worked at a pharmacy in Christiansburg and later relocated to Waco, TX. According to U.S. Census data, Morrison lived next to a Dr. Pepper and his young daughter while in Christiansburg, and many believe Morrison named the drink after the family.

Christiansburg was once the home to Christiansburg Institute, a major school for African Americans in Virginia. Booker T. Washington attended school there, and later, under his tutelage, the institute adapted his "up from slavery" motto, working to transform the school's agenda from one of industry to one of higher education.
